About the event
Speaker Staci Childs, Texas State Board of Education
Hailing from Southwest Atlanta, Georgia, Staci Childs was bred on the shoulders of civil rights leaders,
entrepreneurs, and servant leaders. Staci’s love for education started after winning her school’s spelling bee in 5th grade. It was the spelling bee that first developed her love for learning and competition.
As a former 4th and 5th grade teacher, Staci taught with creativity, lots of jokes, and high expectations. Staci finished her teaching career in 2019 as one of Houston Independent School District’s Teachers of the Year.
She is a graduate of Hampton University, Georgia State University, and Thurgood Marshall School of Law. During President Obama’s administration, Staci had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work as a staffer at the White House for the Domestic Policy Council’s Education Team. Her favorite moment was holding hands with Michelle Obama and hosting a music concert for teachers outside the White House.
She is the author of “Her Beautiful Day,” a children’s book written to push kids to pursue their dreams. Staci is also an attorney that strives to educate and guide people through their toughest times through her advocacy skills. Since her experience at the White House, Staci has enjoyed both the classroom and the courtroom.
Young people steal Staci’s heart every day. In the courtroom, her heart beams through every case. She has successfully helped young dads gain custody of their children after finishing their criminal sentences and helped young parents adopt their siblings during tough times.
Disturbed by arguments on the history curriculum in Texas, Staci created an online web-series called “History Not Taught,” where she highlights the history of Black Americans in the United States and abroad. To date, the show has amassed 6,000,000 views on social media platforms.
Staci was elected in November 2022 the Texas State Board of Education member for District 4, representing students in central, northeast, and southeast Houston (Harris County), and parts of Galveston County. A lover of live music and the arts, Staci spends her free time traveling and brunching with her best girlfriends and taking care of her fur-son, Boseman, named after Chadwick Boseman, star of the Marvel movie Black Panther. In addition to serving on the SBOE and owning her own legal practice, Staci is a musician, podcast host, author, and public speaker.
